Benchmark Flooring
specializes in installing decorative concrete on
both “new” and “old construction concrete floors.”
“Old construction concrete floors” are those in
which the concrete was previously covered by some
other type of flooring, such as carpet, wood, vinyl,
tile, laminate, etc., or that have been left exposed
for a considerable period of time, such as a patio,
garage floor, etc. “New construction concrete
floors” are those that have never been covered by
any type of other flooring and were recently poured,
or were poured sometime ago, but were substantially
protected. We refer to installation of decorative
concrete over old concrete floors as a “Remodel
Project.”
Many customers have
seen decorative concrete remodel projects and love
the character created by existing surface variations
in the concrete or variations in color as the stain
takes to different areas of the floor. Some of the
best stained floors are remodel projects. Old
concrete floors add unique character and, together
with the appropriate home décor, bring a room to
life.
Other customers would
prefer that their remodel project resemble new
construction concrete. Because of existing
variations in the concrete floor, it cannot! If you
want your remodel project to resemble ceramic tile,
then a Remodel Project is not for you!
The following types
of character variations can exist in old
construction concrete:
Floors that were
previously carpeted will have tack-strip holes
around the perimeter of the floor. Benchmark
Flooring can patch these holes, but stain on the
patches will take differently than stain on the rest
of the floor.
The old floor might
also have glue marks (particularly if the concrete
was previously covered with vinyl flooring). Stain
will take differently to these marks.
Benchmark Flooring
can remove most of the old paint that may exist on
concrete floors. However, in some instances, small
speckles of paint may remain on very rough spots of
the floor. Our stain will take differently to those
spots.
In addition, for
floors that were previously covered with tile, most,
if not all, grout lines will show through the stain
after the floor is finished.
Benchmark
Flooring
will protect baseboards and walls, but you will
still need to touch up the baseboards with paint
once we finish, due to our various cleaners that on
occasion will seep through the tape.
These are pictures of
a basic remodel project. Please take time and make
note of the white paint and other stains in the
before picture. Then notice in the
after picture how those spots
have been removed. The homeowner also decided to go
with a darker border, which not only enhanced the
floor but also helped hide the tact strip holes.
This is only one of the many remodels that Benchmark
Flooring has
done.
